CALR and cancer: Cancer cells express significantly higher level of both CRT-binding molecules and sialic acids than do normal cells52,53, implying an evolving process during cancer development, in which cancer cells respond to internal signals, e.g., those that also induce cell death, to produce surface asialoglycoproteins, perhaps via secreted neuraminidases, or co-localization of neuramindase with post-golgi vesicles containing glycoproteins, and passively acquire “eat me” CRT signals.
