The protective role of red wine on metabolic syndrome has been stated in other studies, highlighting the role of ethanol and polyphenols in modulating the endothelial nitric oxide synthase [90], while resveratrol may have protective effects against the MetS via AMP-activated protein kinase and by promoting mitochondria biogenesis [81], in addition to acting as an activator of the NAD(+)-dependent deacetylases sirtuins [81], which have been shown to extend life in animal models [91,92] and prevent insulin resistance and metabolic derangement [81]. This evidence concerns the gene NOS3 and metabolic syndrome.
