GSTM1 and anemia (phenotype): In the 2015 National Family and Health Survey (NFHS), 23% of Indian women had a BMI less than 18.5 kg/m2 and 53% were anaemic (haemoglobin (Hb) <11 gm/dL).12 Even higher rates were reported in rural areas of the state of Maharashtra.13 Maternal anaemia is also associated with postpartum haemorrhage (PPH), LBW, small for gestational age (SGA) babies and perinatal death.14 However, there is minimal information on the consequences of the combination of low BMI and anaemia in pregnant women in rural Maharashtra and whether women with this dual burden should be targeted for specific interventions.
