Many TGF-β signaling-related genes have been reported to play roles in cancer–stromal crosstalk, and these genes are more likely derived from cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) rather than cancer cells, e.g., collagen type V alpha 1 chain (COL5A1), collagen type XI chain 1 (COL11A1), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 3 (TIMP3), and versican (VCAN) [9,10,18]. This evidence concerns the gene VCAN and cancer.
