One possibility is that ammonia accumulated in hepatocytes is initially transported by regulating ammonia transport-related proteins AQP8 and RHCG in mitochondria, which impairs the structure and function of mitochondria via opening mPTP and the intrinsic apoptotic pathway, thus causing energy metabolic disorders and oxidative damage, which affect the urea cycle [41–43]. Here, AQP8 is linked to metabolic disease.
