When limiting the data to only include patients with sepsis caused by E. coli and S. aureus, known to have P2X-dependent toxicity, there was still negative correlation between P2X1 expression and the change in haematocrit and haemoglobin of rs = − 0.82 (p = 0.034, n = 7, Fig. 5a) and rs = − 0.79 (p = 0.048, n = 7, Fig. 5b), respectively.
