IFNA1 and systemic lupus erythematosus: The identification of a constitutive IFN transcriptional signature comprising hundreds of IFN-regulated genes (IRGs) in peripheral blood from a subset of SLE patients [4, 5] suggested that the IFN signature could be used as a clinical biomarker to stratify patients with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases in which type I IFNs are known to play a pathogenic role, referred to as the interferonopathies.
