Loop diuretics such as bumetanide or furosemide, which inhibit the apical Na–K–2Cl co-transporter (NKCC2) in the thick ascending limb, are powerful natriuretic agents but have numerous side effects, including severe hypokalemia, volume depletion and metabolic alkalosis (Schultheis et al., 1998; Gamba, 2005; Sica et al., 2011).
