In addition, VEGF is probably the most potent among all neurotrophic factors tested in experimental ALS models (Gould and Oppenheim, 2011; Tovar-y-Romo et al., 2014) and the only one showing an evident relationship between low levels of the factor (and/or its main receptor VEGFR-2) and motoneuron degeneration, as shown in both animal models and human cases of ALS (Oosthuyse et al., 2001; Brockington et al., 2006; Sathasivam, 2008). This evidence concerns the gene KDR and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
