Expression of a variety of pro‐angiogenic cytokines, such as vascular endothelial growth factor, increase in the brain after ischemia, and the corresponding receptor up‐regulate; these factors induce proliferation and migration of vascular endothelial cells, thereby promote angiogenesis (Brea, Sobrino, Ramos‐Cabrer, & Castillo, 2009).
