Furthermore, using SKAT, another way to obtain gene-based statistics, and integration with mouse transcriptome data, we observed several strong candidate genes: ELOVL4 (elongation of very long chain fatty acids-like 4) was implicated for the biosynthesis of fatty acids in the pathogenesis of inherited macular degeneration (Zhang et al. 2001), severe neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by ichthyosis, spastic quadriplegia, mental retardation (Aldahmesh et al. 2011), spinocerebellar ataxia-34 (SCA34) and erythrokeratodermia (Giroux and Barbeau 1972). Here, ELOVL4 is linked to spinocerebellar ataxia type 34.
