Human leucocytic elastase (HLE) is the main protein secreted by activated neutrophils, ejected during exocytosis from azurophilic granules, and the main factor promoting tissue destruction in inflammatory diseases (e.g., acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), lung emphysema, glomerulonephritis, or rheumatoid arthritis) [6].
