From a functional perspective, MT1-MMP acts as a collagenase, which is involved in the degradation and remodeling of the extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes, such as embryonic development and reproduction, as well as in diverse aggressive disease processes, such as in lung, liver, oral mucosal, gastric, intestinal, pancreatic, renal, prostate, testicular, colorectal, breast, ovarian, endometrial, cervical, glioma, melanoma, head, and neck cancers1,2,6–8.
