Many of the mutations associated with neurodevelopmental disorders reside in genes encoding for neural or synaptic proteins (Xu et al., 2012; De Rubeis et al., 2014; Sanders et al., 2015), suggesting that they may impact: (1) the development and maturation of OXT neurons; (2) the OXT projections; (3) the intrinsic properties of OXT neurons; and (4) the trafficking and release of OXT. Here, OXT is linked to neurodevelopmental disorder.
