The O157:H7/H- serotype (14/23 vs. 77/510), the stx2 subtype in general (22/23 vs. 285/510) and stx2a (18/23 vs. 73/510) more specifically, as well as strains harbouring the virulence genes eaeA (22/23 vs. 295/510, p = 0.0002) and ehxA (22/23 vs. 377/510, p = 0.0199) were significantly more frequently isolated from patients suffering from HUS (all p < 0.0001). Here, STX2 is linked to hemolytic-uremic syndrome.
