In vivo, knockout of adenosine A1 receptors leads to fatal status epilepticus after both intra‐hippocampal kainic acid (Fedele et al. 2006) and traumatic brain injury (Kochanek et al. 2006). In humans, the adenosine receptor antagonist theophylline can precipitate status epilepticus (Kohl et al. 2011). These observations indicate the importance of adenosine A1 receptors in limiting, localizing and terminating seizure activity.
