REN and heart failure: We also found that people with type 1 diabetes mellitus were less commonly prescribed drugs known to reduce the risk of heart failure (whether directly or through reducing the risk of heart disease); this included antihypertensives, drugs acting on the renin–angiotensin, system and lipid-lowering drugs.22 Importantly, these differences were still found after taking into account the fact that people with type 2 diabetes mellitus are older, and even after adjusting for each patient’s predicted risk of heart failure (based on their baseline characteristics).
