Serum levels of the bone resorption marker C-terminal cross-linked telopeptide (CrossLaps) and the bone formation marker osteocalcin are lower in patients with diabetes [18], suggesting that T2DM may be a state of low bone turnover, potentially leading to a more brittle and fragile bone including also a theoretically negative effect on bone size by reduced periosteal bone formation with increasing age [17].
