Persistently elevated CD8+ cells counts during long-term cART have been linked with increased risk of non-AIDS-related events in HIV-infected patients, regardless of CD4 T-cells recovery, and have been related with a chronic inflammation status, and with increased immuneactivation markers such as IL-6, soluble CD14 and d-dimer [39, 41, 42]. This evidence concerns the gene CD8A and AIDS.
