Interestingly, the vast majority (67%) of these genes are involved in the inflammatory cell response, such as IL8, CXCL2, IL6 or IL1B. Thus, interaction with adipocytes strongly induces several hormone-sensitive genes in the two ER+, non-invasive breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 and T47D, whereas in TN MDA-MB-231 cells, co-culture with adipocytes results in the induction of pro-inflammatory genes.
