Over time, there has been an extension in the spectrum of APOL1-associated kidney diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus [57,58], membranous nephropathy [59], sickle cell disease [60], and even an association of two risk variants of APOL1 in diabetic patients with CKD [61,39].
