BECN1 and leukemia: The same was observed for PM‐17 as it induced apoptotic and autophagic cell death in vitro and in vivo.18 The sandwich POM [H4{CuII9AsIII6O15(H2O)6}(AsIIIW9O33)2]8− exhibited remarkable activity against cancerous K‐562 (leukemia) and Hep‐G2 (liver) cells (IC50=0.4 μm for both) by affecting lysosomes in vitro, which led to the induction of both apoptosis and autophagy.131 The autophagy inducing property might originate from the AsIII containing unit as As2O3 is known to induce autophagy in leukemia cells by increasing the level of Beclin‐1, a critical regulator of autophagy.132
