It has been shown that hypercholesterolemia minimizes the effectiveness of the antioxidant defense system by reducing the activity of CAT and SOD in rats.(5) Our data supports this observation and it also showed that 30 mg of BCP reversed this effect by elevating the antioxidant enzyme activity of serum SOD (and CAT although it didn’t reach a statistical significance) to a level close to that observed in normal rats, suggesting that BCP has boosted the antioxidant systems. Here, CAT is linked to familial hypercholesterolemia.
