Nestin expression was suggested to occur in endothelial progenitor cells in the context of vascularisation, e.g. during the embryonic period [26, 27], during periodical organization of the uterus [28] and during tumour angiogenesis [6–10] Thus, nestin seems to be a marker for special cells in all layers of vessels that are not terminally differentiated and have a potential for proliferation.
