IFN-γ production by NK cells (Bajenoff et al., 2006) and type 1 CD8+ T cells (Belkaid et al., 2002b) also correlates with protection against L. major in mice, whereas CD8+ T cells play an important role in controlling visceral leishmaniasis (Stäger and Rafati, 2012). This evidence concerns the gene CD8A and visceral leishmaniasis.
