Studies by Mikolla's group using Gata1 and Gata2 double knockout mouse ESCs revealed that these cells, in contrast to Scl knockout ESCs, can differentiate into Flk1+Tie2+CD31+CD41+c-kit– cells, raising the possibility that the absence of Gata1 and Gata2 does not prevent HE formation (Org et al., 2015). This evidence concerns the gene KIT and hereditary elliptocytosis.
