The functional GSTM1 enzyme has been shown to play a role in cancer prevention [31] and suggesting that the low frequency of GSTM1 gene deletion in Ghanaians in general will result in a better protection from the effects of reactive metabolites such as, benzo(a)pyrene, known to cause lung cancer than in Asians and Caucasian Whites [4]. This evidence concerns the gene GSTM1 and lung cancer.
