Among the cytokines released by epithelial cells IL-8 holds a pivotal role in the recruitment of T lymphocytes and neutrophils at the site of inflammation [33], and it is up-regulated in the colon of patients with IBD [34]; IL-6 stimulates neutrophils chemotaxis, it is associated with tissue destruction in the colon [35] and its serum level is correlated with disease severity [36]. This evidence concerns the gene IL6 and inflammatory bowel disease.
