GSTM1 and anemia (phenotype): The causes of anemia are multifactorial, however, about 50% of all anemia cases are due to iron deficiency [11, 12], although other factors such as micronutrient deficiencies (i.e., folate, riboflavin, and vitamins A and B12) [12–14], acute and chronic inflammation (i.e., malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV) [13, 15, 16], and inherited or acquired disorders that affect Hb synthesis, RBC production, or RBC survival (i.e., hemoglobinopathies) [15, 17], can all be etiologies of anemia.
