In a retrospective study in Germany, Latus et al. studied 137 patients who had normal kidney function at hospital admission during 2001–2012 and identified 3 predictive factors (thrombocytopenia, proteinuria, 12-fold elevated C-reactive protein) of severe AKI (defined as kidney injury and failure of kidney function, according to the RIFLE criteria) (15). This evidence concerns the gene CRP and acute kidney injury.
