Fish oil may not directly affect the mechanisms that underlie immunosenescence, such as persistent infection with chronic copathogens such as CMV, which has been associated with immunosenescence and mortality in healthy adults.34,35 In a placebo-controlled trial of HIV-infected persons with asymptomatic CMV infection, the antiviral drug valganciclovir reduced both hsCRP levels and number of activated CD8+ T lymphocytes,36 which, in turn, have been associated with CD57 expression.37 Other agents that directly target immunosenescence mechanisms should be tested in future studies. Here, CD8A is linked to cytomegalovirus infection.
