Today, three mechanisms leading to ICD have been thoroughly characterized [35]: first, the release of ATP by apoptotic cells as a ‘find-me’ signal for dendritic cells and macrophages subsequently infiltrating the tumor; second, calreticulin exposure at the surface of cancer cells as an ‘eat-me’ signal for dendritic cells; third, release of high mobility group box 1 (HMGB-1) protein from the nucleus leading to pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion. This evidence concerns the gene HMGB1 and cancer.
