In human breast cancer cell lines, expression of the mitochondrial protein lactamase beta (LACTB) is significantly downregulated; LACTB downregulation is required for the synthesis of two phospholipids, phosphatidyl ethanolamine (PE) and LysoPE, that are essential for membrane biosynthesis (Keckesova et al., 2017). The gene discussed is LACTB; the disease is breast carcinoma.
