In response to retinal injuries or pathologies, such as ERM, and hyperglycemia there is an activation of Müller cells with reactive gliosis, characterized by hypertrophy, proliferation and upregulation of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) [8,9]; this intermediate filament strengthens the Müller cells-ILM bond, acting as a bridge, due to its interaction with cytoskeleton, surface receptors, and the proteins of extracellular matrix [10,11].
