Many PD-related genes are associated with mitochondrial function, such as alpha-synuclein, Parkin, PINK1 (phosphatase and tensin homologue induced putative kinase 1), Ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1 (Uchl1), DJ-1 (also known as PD protein 7, PARK7) and LRRK2 (leucine-rich repeat kinase 2), indicating thereby that mitochondrial dysfunction could play a central role in PD pathogenesis [124–126].
