Manipulating the response of these cells by, for example, with antagonists that block the signaling pathways involved in immune modulation (e.g., TLR4 inhibitors) and the use of treatments against inflammation (e.g., nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs) will provide further information that may uncover the mechanism(s) at play or help in the development of potential therapies to reverse the disadvantageous effects of infection and inflammation in maternal–fetal communication. This evidence concerns the gene TLR4 and infection.
