A number of cancer specific splice variants have been identified and discussed in this article, including VEGFA, KLF6, BCL2L2, ERG, and AR. Novel therapeutic strategies including the use of SSOs to alter the balance of pro- and anti-apoptotic BCL2L2 isoforms, siRNAs that target specific AR exons, small molecule inhibitors that block AR-mediated signalling, or small molecules that inhibit splice factor kinases, have all shown promise. The gene discussed is VEGFA; the disease is cancer.
