Specifically, altered susceptibility to meningococcal infection has been associated with specific alleles of genes coding for cell-surface receptors (CECAM3 and CECAM6) [19], pattern recognition receptors (TLR4 and TLR9) [20,21], complement pathway regulators (CFH and CFHR3) [22,23], antimicrobial peptides (DEFB1) [24] and pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL1RN and TNF-α) [25,26].
