Adiponectin, an adipose tissue derived polypeptide, is exclusively expressed in the white adipose tissue and to some extent in brown adipose tissue; it has insulin-sensitizing and anti-diabetic properties and is inversely associated with adiposity [23]; because of the close relationship between serum adiponectin and insulin resistance, it has also been proposed as a useful diagnostic criterion for diabetes or metabolic syndrome [24]. Here, ADIPOQ is linked to diabetes mellitus.
