Although we were able to identify significantly altered methylation on an ABCG1 locus in relation to MetS among African-Americans that is consistent with epigenetic studies of metabolic traits in other ethnicities, improved understanding of racial differences in the biological mechanisms leading to significantly higher prevalence of MetS and components such as type 2 diabetes in African-Americans relative to other racial groups will require a larger study with adequate representation of multiple racial groups. This evidence concerns the gene ABCG1 and metabolic syndrome.
