Furthermore, electrostatic interactions between the positively charged IR-Pyr and the negatively charged HA polymer were used to generate micellar aggregates (HA-IR-Pyr) that preferentially accumulate in CD44 overexpressing tumors, are cleaved by hyaluronidase inside the cell, and localize in the cancer mitochondria (Fig. 1a) to induce high PDT efficacy during laser irradiation, which has been proven by in vitro and in vivo experiments.
