In this model of genetic hypercholesterolemia, endothelial dysfunction is associated with the reduced gene and protein expression of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) (Guizoni et al., 2016; Langbein et al., 2016), and reduced dimerization of this enzyme, resulting in impaired endothelial nitric oxide (NO) release (Guizoni et al., 2016). Here, NOS3 is linked to endothelial dysfunction.
