Vitamin C treatment, mediated by TRAIL, induces apoptosis by activating Bax and caspases, decreasing Bcl-xL, and releasing cytochrome C. The effect of vitamin C at achievable physiological levels to induce breast cancer cell apoptosis by inducing TRAIL via the TET-mediated DNA demethylation warrants further preclinical and clinical evaluation as a means to prevent and treat breast cancer. This evidence concerns the gene BAX and breast carcinoma.
