HMGA1 and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: The data in our study demonstrates that HMGA1 not only plays a critical role in permitting normal airway differentiation and repair following injury, but in the absence of high levels of HMGA1 expression, the BC resort to a default, pathologic, COPD-like phenotype and can no longer function to repair the injured epithelium in a normal fashion (Supplementary Figure 4).
