Based on previous studies describing the localization of functional NIS protein at the baso-lateral cell membrane [38] we could assume that the treatment with deacetylase inhibitors could not only restore the expression of NIS in thyroid cancer cells, but also modulate the activity of the sodium iodide symporter, as confirmed by the partial increase of radioiodine up-take. The gene discussed is SLC5A5; the disease is thyroid gland carcinoma.
