KUSs (Kyoto University Substances), which specifically block the ATPase activities of valosin-containing protein (VCP), the most abundant soluble ATPase in all types of cells including neurons, have shown promise for preventing neuronal cell death in mouse models of RP (Hasegawa et al., 2016b; Ikeda et al., 2014), glaucoma (Nakano et al., 2016), and retinal artery occlusion (Hata et al., 2017). This evidence concerns the gene DNAH8 and glaucoma.
