In type 2 diabetes, islet amyloid polypeptide protein (IAPP), a protein responsible for the deposition of amyloid in the pancreas, has also been identified as a trigger for the NLRP3 inflammasome with resultant mature IL-1β secretion from pancreatic islets, thereby further contributing to the inflammatory response in diabetes (Masters et al., 2010). This evidence concerns the gene NLRP3 and diabetes mellitus.
