The inflammatory markers C-reactive protein (CRP), IL-6, IL-10, ferritin, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), and procalcitonin were elevated whereas the levels of cutaneous T-cell-attracting chemokine (CTACK), stem cell factor (SCF), interferon-γ-induced protein-10 (IP-10), TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), and membrane-bound immunoglobulin (MIG) were depleted in appendicitis patients when compared with patients with other causes of abdominal pain (Fig. 5a). Here, CRP is linked to appendicitis.
