Several publications have shown that the transcription and cell fate determination factor Dach1 is essential for the differentiation of embryonic cells into specific cell types.21, 23, 25, 51 Loss of Dach1 in mice is lethal and the knockout in breast cancer cells, for instance, resulted in highly dynamic and proliferating cells.25 Furthermore, Dach1 was found to play an important role for renal function.18, 19, 20 However, almost nothing is known about the expression of Dach1 in podocytes and its function in glomeruli. The gene discussed is DACH1; the disease is breast cancer.
