The estrogenic activity of ZEA in prostate tissue, possibly acting through ERα, whose effect might be associated with the proliferation, invasiveness and migration of cancer cells, is similar to those that caused by estrogen: It is known that generally ERα is responsible for the proliferation of prostate cancer cells, whereas ERβ is believed to have the opposite effect [32,33]. This evidence concerns the gene ESR2 and prostate carcinoma.
